When does a WhatsApp QR Code make sense?

A WhatsApp QR code is ideal when customers or prospects want to reach you quickly and easily. Instead of a phone number that needs to be typed into the phone, a single scan opens a chat with you directly. Particularly useful for small businesses, freelancers and anyone who uses WhatsApp as their primary customer channel. You can use the code on flyers, posters, business cards or your website. With a pre-filled message like 'I'm interested in a consultation', you lower the entry barrier further. The QR code uses the official wa.me link and works on Android, iPhone and automatically opens WhatsApp Web on desktop.

WhatsApp QR Code vs. WhatsApp Web QR Code – what's the difference?

  • wa.me link: official standard, opens WhatsApp app directly
  • Android from 9+ recognises the code with the standard camera
  • WhatsApp Web QR ≠ this code: login code vs. contact link
  • Also works for WhatsApp Business numbers

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter the number correctly?

Without + and without leading zero, with country code. A German mobile number +49 151 12345678 becomes 4915112345678.

What's the difference from the WhatsApp Web QR code?

The QR code in WhatsApp Web / Linked Devices is a temporary login code for the desktop app – it expires seconds after being displayed. The QR code you create here is a permanent contact link: others scan it and land directly in a chat with you.

Does the WhatsApp QR code work on Android?

Yes. The standard camera app on Android 9 and newer recognises wa.me links directly. On older Android versions, a simple QR scanner app from the Play Store opens the link. The chat then opens automatically in the WhatsApp app.

Does the QR code also work with WhatsApp Web?

Yes. The wa.me link automatically recognises the device: on mobile it opens the app, in a desktop browser it opens WhatsApp Web.

Can I create a WhatsApp QR code for a business?

Yes. Simply enter the WhatsApp Business number – the link works the same way and opens the business chat.

What happens if the recipient doesn't have WhatsApp?

The wa.me link then opens a webpage with a download hint. The chat only starts after installation.
